What words of wisdom or advice do you live by?

At risk of sounding like a Nike commercial, “Just do it.” Putting off doing something you’re dreading? Stop making excuses, and just do it. Presented with an exciting opportunity which might push you out of your comfort zone? Just do it! I believe we create our own destinies and taking action to achieve our goals and fight for what we want is the best way towards fulfillment.

How do you make sure you stay connected with your professional network?

I am extremely active in my state association. I had several mentors and friends in the association who made me feel welcome and connected, which was especially meaningful living in a rural area. When I was asked to serve on the board of the association, I was so glad to be able to pay it forward by creating a Young Optometrist group to help newcomers to get to know other people around the state. Serving on the board of the state association has also opened up opportunities for me to attend national meetings, which allow me to stay in touch with my older friends and make new ones nationwide.
