(Oxford, Ohio) At Delta Zeta’s 56th National Convention/Everlasting Orlando event, attendees had the honor of initiating six incredible women as alumnae members, each contributing with her own story and passion for Delta Zeta. Among them were Beth Wade and Mary Smith, whose connection to Delta Zeta runs deep as mothers of current members.
Amy and Beth Wade: A New Chapter Together
When Amy Wade, National Vice President, Zeta Psi, Stephen F. Austin State University, joined Delta Zeta, she was searching for leadership opportunities and a home away from home. That need became especially real when her parents moved seven hours away.
While her father was unsure about sorority life, her mother, Beth, encouraged Amy and her sisters to do the things they wanted to do. “My mom has always been my biggest champion behind this,” Amy said.
Beth grew up on a farm with four brothers and, during her own college years, she never had the chance to join a women’s organization. Becoming an alumna initiate now gives her the opportunity to be part of the same sisterhood cherished by her daughter.
“It’s something special that I get to share with just Amy,” Beth said. “I look forward to learning more about Delta Zeta and supporting young women in college.”
Jamie Metz Winters, Omicron Pi, Frostburg State University, and Mary Smith: A Bond Made Stronger
When a friend introduced Jamie Metz Winters to Delta Zeta, she fell in love with the hard work and fun the women were having, so she joined the Omicron Pi Chapter at Frostburg State University as an alumna initiate. From the very beginning, her mother, Mary Smith, became an important support for the entire chapter.
Because of the care and dedication Mary offered over the years, Jamie saw the alumnae initiation as a way to recognize and thank her mother for her support over the years.
“I was excited to pin my mom and celebrate initiation day with her, as we would have with our collegians,” Jamie said. “For both of us, joining as alumnae gave us an opportunity to join when that option wasn’t available to us in college.”
For Mary Smith, joining Delta Zeta meant becoming part of the sisterhood that has made such an impact on her daughter’s life. “It will give us a warmer and truer relationship than we had before,” she said. As College Chapter Director for the Omicron Pi Chapter, Jamie looks forward to attending the next National Convention alongside her mom, not just as family, but as Delta Zeta sisters.
