(Oxford, Ohio) While National Hazing Prevention Week highlights our collective commitment, true culture change happens when we practice hazing prevention every day. Hazing is not always obvious or physical. It can be emotional, psychological or cultural. Here are ways to maintain hazing prevention efforts year-round.
Keep Learning
Return regularly to Delta Zeta’s Learning Center (DZ Member App > Quick Links > TLC) to refresh your knowledge and commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all members. The National Policy Statements Refresher course and the Big Sister Certification program are designed to ensure members understand expectations of creating a sense of belonging, model the traits of a positive role model, and support their little sister throughout the new member journey.
Strengthen your commitment to our shared values using team-building resources from HazingPrevention.org. These tools are designed to help you grow as a leader, foster meaningful connections, and create a safe, supportive environment for all members.
Preventing hazing is about reflecting on the culture that shapes member experiences. Ask yourself:
What unspoken expectations exist for new members?
Do all members feel safe speaking up?
Are sisterhood activities inclusive, empowering and consistent with Delta Zeta’s values?
Taking time to evaluate culture ensures prevention becomes a habit, not just a one-time event. StopHazing.org has several workshops and training that can support you or your chapter in this process.
Take the pledge and encourage accountability among your sisters. Report hazing concerns when they arise. Whether through the Delta Zeta Incident Reporting Form or the National Hazing Prevention Hotline, your voice makes a difference.
Stay connected with your Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council or Multicultural Greek Council to co-sponsor events and keep hazing prevention efforts visible throughout the year. Many campuses also offer student life staff, wellness educators or conduct officers who can provide workshops, training or offer resources tailored to your chapter.
If your campus doesn’t currently offer hazing prevention programming, be the chapter that leads the conversation. Advocate for ongoing education, suggest partnerships or invite guest speakers who reinforce Delta Zeta’s commitment to a safe and empowering membership experience.
Hazing prevention is not a one-week effort. It’s a way of living our sisterhood. When we choose education, awareness, advocacy and partnership year-round, we create the Delta Zeta experience every member deserves.
