“Regret Is Worse Than Failure” – Lessons in Leadership from the Norma Minch Andrisek Leadership Conference

By Cecile Granger, Sigma-Louisiana State University

Since attending the Norma Minch Andrisek Leadership Conference, I have discovered a newfound sense of direction and confidence in my leadership goals. This conference was truly valuable for all attendees in more ways than one.

Having the opportunity to dive deeper into the true meaning of each of our Delta Zeta values, while also connecting with alumnae, National Council members and so many other collegiate members, is so valuable. Learning that many other chapters, no matter how big or small, are seeing similar patterns within our members was so comforting to know.

We were also able to collaborate and share ideas on how to prioritize our core Delta Zeta values in our own lives and in our sorority culture. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting other women who shared my same goals, attitude and general love for leadership, and I am so excited to nurture those connections for the betterment of Delta Zeta. Being surrounded by such powerful and driven women is so empowering for young leaders, and I truly thank Delta Zeta for the opportunity.

My biggest takeaway from the weekend was from the empowerment keynote speech given by Jessica Gendron. After reflecting on my time in Delta Zeta thus far, I felt that empowerment was an area that provided the most growth opportunities.

As I was scribbling notes all over my notebook, one phrase that stuck out to me was “regret is worse than failure.” Hearing that, I felt so empowered to chase opportunities that may feel unattainable to me.

Another point that Jessica made was that empowerment comes from within. In order to empower others, you must empower yourself. This also stuck with me because, as a member of my chapter’s Executive Board, I am always striving to uplift, support and empower everyone in my chapter. However, sometimes I lose sight of fulfilling those traits for myself as well.

Following the keynote speech in the debrief with my homeroom group, a lot of us connected over our profound takeaways from the speech. I loved getting to share what moments stuck with them and hearing things that I may have missed.

Overall, the Norma Minch Andrisek Leadership Conference was an outstanding display of Delta Zeta’s continuous support of its members, both collegiate and alumnae. I am so blessed to be a part of such an outstanding organization that truly cares about developing the upcoming leaders of our society. I cannot thank Delta Zeta enough for the opportunity to attend this conference. I am so excited to get back to my chapter and share the feelings of confidence, empowerment and true love for Delta Zeta!
