I Am a Sorority Woman: An Alumna’s Perspective

Delta Zeta Women's Membership Organization | Delta Zeta Sorority

Being a sorority woman is more than just wearing Greek letters—it’s about embodying values that shape our personal and professional lives. When you join a sorority like Delta Zeta, you’re not only becoming part of a sisterhood but also stepping into a network that opens countless doors to your future.

We’d love to know why you joined a sorority! Tell us your story on why you wanted to join Panhellenic and why Delta Zeta ended up being the one for you. Also, tell us why you continue to stay involved with Delta Zeta.

Beta Delta Class of 1991

“Starting at a big university is daunting but recruitment seemed like a great way to find a home there. I met so many great friends within Delta Zeta as well as friends I met during recruitment that found their homes in other sororities. I had my heart fully decided on a particular sorority before I even got there based on my brother’s girlfriend at the time and her love for it. Once I met the Beta Delta chapter of Delta Zeta during recruitment, I felt seen, heard, accepted and had a lot of fun. I put all my eggs in the other sorority’s basket and did not get invited in. Delta Zeta still wanted me and without hesitation, I accepted knowing when one door closes the RIGHT door opens. The other sorority did me a lifelong favor that I am so happy for the outcome.

Staying involved in Delta Zeta after college has provided me with wonderful friends especially when moving to new places for work, opportunities to lead, mentor and network. Whoever said you cannot make new friends as an adult never joined a sorority alumnae chapter. In the past few years, my local chapter, state group and Area III have taken me on filled long weekends to beaches, culinary adventures, Disney and Asheville, to name a few. I am looking forward to joining many of the alumnae sisters I have met over the years in Nashville at the end of this month and Vegas next year with Area III. The great times are always abundantly available to you, your alumnae sisters and lifelong friends to enjoy them with are there.”

Joining a sorority was a way for me to find a close-knit community and forge lifelong friendships during my college experience. After completing my freshman year, I was drawn to the idea of being a part of something bigger than myself, where I could both contribute and grow. The Panhellenic values of sisterhood, leadership and service resonated with me deeply so during my sophomore year that I officially joined Delta Zeta because I wanted to surround myself with individuals who shared similar goals and aspirations. My desire to build meaningful connections and to give back to the community were key factors in my decision to join.

I chose Delta Zeta after meeting several of its members who convinced me that it was the right fit for me. Their genuine warmth and enthusiasm for the sorority were contagious, and I was impressed by their commitment to both friendship and community service. The values of Delta Zeta aligned closely with my own, and I felt a strong sense of connection to all of the sisters. Delta Zeta’s focus on academic success, sisterhood and leadership opportunities further solidified my decision and it became clear to me that this was the place where I could thrive.

Since recently moving across the country, staying involved with Delta Zeta post-college has been a great way for me to reconnect with fellow alumnae and build friendships in my new community. I’ve found that the sorority provides a strong support network, making it easier to adjust and settle into my new home. I am currently serving as the president of my local alumnae chapter which has been incredibly fulfilling, as it allows me to contribute to the organization and help others find the same sense of belonging and connection that I did. Remaining active in Delta Zeta nearly five years after graduating has enriched my life and provided valuable opportunities for friendship, community service and personal growth.”

“I never questioned joining a sorority. I was part of an all girl sports team as a child through my teen years so I knew what sisterhood felt like. In addition, my older sister was a Chi Omega and I remember going to family weekends and being enthralled with the rituals that were a part of the events. They’d gave families tours of their sorority house and I could tell even as a little kid that living in a house would make my college experience that much better. (P.S. it did!) There were only a handful of sororities where I went to school so it was a hard decision as I could have seen myself in most of the houses. But what brought me back to Delta Zeta were those magical unicorn connections where you meet once and it just clicks. I’m still friends with those women decades later and I still feel that unicorn magic.

I continue to stay involved because I love networking. I love connecting with people. I love philanthropy. As an alumna, I love how I can meet a sister from another chapter or from another era and have an instant commonality. What I didn’t expect, however, is what it would feel like to reunite with sisters from our college days. Reconnecting decades later, it’s an indescribable and incredible gift to spend time with women I met as teenagers who can celebrate the women we’ve become. It’s a unique and unspoken bond I wish everyone could experience.”

From day one, you’re surrounded by a supportive community that fosters scholarship, philanthropy and lifelong friendships. These connections provide invaluable opportunities for personal growth and career advancement. Through leadership roles within the sorority, you gain real-world skills like project management and team building that employers value.

Moreover, sorority membership offers access to a vast alumnae network. This network can be instrumental in finding internships, job opportunities and mentorship. Events like Delta Zeta’s Truly Connected, or our online mentor platform, TC Grow, provide spaces for like-minded members to connect.

Joining a sorority means investing in your future. The bonds you build and the skills you develop create a foundation for success long after graduation. Truly embrace the journey and watch as these opportunities transform your life.
