Can you share a brief 5-7 sentence biography about yourself, highlight key moments in your career that have shaped who you are today?

I am a Transportation Security Inspector for Surface Operations within the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Transportation Security Administration (TSA). I specialize in surface transportation safety and national security and focus on educating others through mentorship and training. I earned my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Youngstown State University and my Certificate of Specialization in Homeland Security from Des Moines Area Community College, which has helped shape my career today. Most recently, I was honored to receive the Region 2 Surface Inspector of the Quarter recognition from the Transportation Security Administration’s, Assistant Administrator for Surface Operations, Sonya T. Proctor. I have been fortunate during my career path to serve in multiple roles within the federal government and hope to continue my dedication to the TSA mission to protect the United States’ transportation systems and ensure the freedom of movement for people and commerce.

Who has been an invaluable mentor for your professional career? What did you learn from this friendship?

My partner, Jen, has been a vital part of my professional career. Having been with the agency for almost 24 years, she has been able to provide insight that I could have only dreamed of. She consistently encourages me to work hard, apply for promotions and be the absolute best I can be. Jen has taught me life lessons I will forever be grateful for.

How did you discover your passion and what opportunities have helped shape your curiosity for what you do?

To be completely honest, this was not the career I ever thought I would pursue. However, from the moment I began my journey with TSA as a part-time officer at the Pittsburgh International Airport, I knew this was just the beginning of where this path could take me. Ultimately, my passion for knowledge and growth, and the amazing opportunities this agency has provided me to travel and learn new things have helped shape my curiosity for what I do today.

Looking ahead in your career, how do you envision continuing to incorporate generosity into your leadership style and professional endeavors?

Looking ahead in my career, I hope to create a work environment where generosity is not just a value but a practice that strengthens relationships, enhances collaboration, and ultimately drives success for my office and the agency as a whole through leading by example. I believe that showing generosity in my own behaviors and decisions sets the strongest example for others. Whether it is offering a helping hand, sharing credit for successes, or being open and transparent in my communication, I hope to represent the behavior I wish to see in others.

How has your community helped you professionally? Is there a friend (or Delta Zeta sister) that has been behind you every step of the way on your career journey?

I have to say my village has been with me through all the ups and downs of not only my career but my life, especially my best friend and fellow Kappa Chi sister, Augusta (Fronzaglio) Olson. Despite the struggles of maintaining a long-distance adult friendship and life in general, she has been there for me every step of the way. From Delta Zeta sister to best friend, to maid of honor, to auntie, some of my most memorable and cherished “promotions” have been thanks to her!

What does empowerment mean to you, and how have you worked to empower others in your career or personal life?

Empowerment to me, means taking charge using the tools, resources and support you have to contribute meaningfully to your life, career, relationships, etc. I strive to empower others in my career by providing mentorship and training, encouraging new ideas, recognizing and celebrating achievements, providing resources and creating an inclusive environment for all.

What does it mean to you to create an environment of belonging for others, and how do you carry that lesson into your personal and professional life?

To me, creating an environment of belonging for others means developing a space where we all feel valued, accepted and connected to one another despite our differences. I carry this lesson into my personal life by making sure to support my family and friends in whatever makes them truly happy. In my professional life, I carry this lesson by promoting teamwork and collaboration throughout not only my office and division but with all internal and external stakeholders.
