Which of the Delta Zeta shared values resonates with you the most? Empowerment
How did you discover your passion for what you do, and what opportunities have helped shape your career?
I was a student orientation coordinator at my alma mater. I facilitated a training for 100 student volunteers and fell in love with it. I pursued my masters and moved cross country to Seattle to pursue my career. While I worked on my masters, I interned on the campus, presented at conferences and built connections with industry leaders.
Who has been an invaluable mentor for your professional career? What did you learn from them?
My mentor has been Dr. Suzanne Ensmann. She taught me a lot about the tools I use today in my industry, how to brand myself and not being afraid of stepping out of my comfort zone.
What words of wisdom or advice do you live by?
“Comparison is the thief of joy.” – Theodore Roosevelt. Our culture is full of comparisons. But, each of us are made differently. We are not the same. Instead, I empower others to honor the skills they have and utilize them where they go.
What is the most impactful book you have read, or podcast you have listened to, that relates to you professionally? What made it so impactful?
”13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don’t Do” by Amy Morin. It’s one of my favorite reads. The book empowered me, as a woman, when entering the field as a young woman of color. The book discusses confidence and how comparison kills your joy. It made me realize the importance of sisterhood, living for yourself, and being confident in who you are.
How do you make sure you stay connected with your professional network?
LinkedIn, networking events, sometimes it’s calling someone or writing an email. You’d be amazed at how people you haven’t seen in awhile want to stay connected with you.
How have friendships helped you professionally? Is there a friend (or Delta Zeta sister) that has been behind you every step of the way on your career journey?
One of my closest friends I met at work. We’re now going six years strong! Sometimes we think friends can’t be made at work, but she has been one of my closest allies. We support each other with our goals. We’re there when things aren’t so great, either.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Baking – I love sweets!
