Joy, Growth and Lasting Impact: Narda Orozco’s SeriousFun Camp Volunteer Experience

If you’ve ever talked to a Delta Zeta sister who’s volunteered with SeriousFun Children’s Network, chances are she’ll tell you it was an experience of a lifetime. Narda Orozco, a Delta Zeta Global Marketing and Philanthropy Intern and member of the Pi Psi Chapter at California State University/San Marcos, spent an unforgettable week at Camp Boggy Creek, a SeriousFun camp in Florida. She experienced stores of joy and growth and made unforgettable connections.

This past week, I had the incredible honor of volunteering at Camp Boggy Creek in Florida. I served during the Gastro/Arthritis/Cerebral Palsy session, and it was truly one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve ever had.

One of the most memorable moments from my week was during pool day with our color group, Yellow Pride. Some campers were able to safely and fully submerge in the water for the first time in their lives. Watching their faces light up, completely carefree and filled with joy, is a memory I will cherish forever. It was a powerful reminder of the resilience and positivity these campers carry with them, despite the challenges they face.

On our last night, we gathered in a circle to write notes to one another, sharing gratitude and favorite moments from the week. A camper told me, “Although this was just one week for you, the words and the memories I shared with you will last a lifetime.” That moment truly stayed with me as it reminded me that while we aim to make a difference in their lives, they profoundly impact ours as well.

This experience showed me just how vital spaces like Camp Boggy Creek are. They create a sense of belonging, confidence and joy — not only for the campers, but also for the volunteers. I encourage every Delta Zeta sister to consider volunteering at a SeriousFun camp. You’ll witness so much joy, learn even more from your campers and walk away forever changed.
