Which of the Delta Zeta shared values resonates with you the most?Community
Tell us about a defining moment in your career so far – how did it impact your future and what did you learn from it?
As part of my role as Director of Education and Community Partnerships at the Massillon Museum, I served as co-chair of the organization’s Accessibility Committee. I worked alongside staff, volunteers and representatives from a variety of accessibility-minded organizations throughout Northeast Ohio to promote access to the museum’s events, educational programming and spaces. My involvement in the committee’s work helped me to realize my passion for accessibility, which now guides my museum work and how I lead. Everyone should feel welcome at museums and other cultural organizations.
What advice would you give Delta Zeta sisters pursuing leadership roles in your field?
My advice to sisters who aim to hold leadership positions in museums is to start networking to learn more about the field. This industry encompasses art and history museums, science centers, zoos, aquariums, and more. Attending local, regional, or national meetings or conferences; joining your state’s museum association, shadowing a leader in the field for a day, or even asking a museum leader you admire to grab a cup of coffee can be great ways to build connections and gain knowledge about the opportunities in museums. Current museum leaders all started somewhere, whether volunteering, interning, serving on a committee or holding a part-time role.
How has being a Delta Zeta influenced your professional journey or approach to leadership?
Delta Zeta has greatly influenced my approach to leadership. I served in several leadership roles for Alpha Rho Chapter. Through sisterhood and philanthropy events, recruitment and other activities, I valued how our chapter worked together as a team. My time as a collegiate member taught me to lead by example, learn from the world around me and give everyone a seat at the table. I continue to build upon those skills as a museum educator and leader today. I strive to work with my team to offer educational programming that provides a sense of belonging for all visitors so they feel seen, heard and valued.
