How did you discover your passion for what you do, and what opportunities have helped shape your career?

My passion for community engagement and service has been cultivated through a combination of personal experiences, professional opportunities and the values instilled by Delta Zeta. From a young age, I was drawn to the idea of making a positive impact in the lives of others and contributing to the betterment of my community. As I embarked on my professional career, I was fortunate to encounter a myriad of opportunities that allowed me to channel my passion into meaningful action. Whether it was through my role as a community health programmer, where I collaborated with various partner organizations to improve access to essential services or my involvement in launching fundraising groups and serving on multiple non-profit boards, each experience deepened my commitment to serving others and fostering a sense of community.

Who has been an invaluable mentor for your professional career? What did you learn from them?

An invaluable mentor in my professional journey has been the Chief Nursing Officer at the hospital where I work. From her, I’ve learned firsthand what a hardworking woman looks like, one who embodies both kindness and determination. As a mentor, she has not only provided me with guidance and support but has also served as a shining example of leadership and compassion in the healthcare field.

What words of wisdom or advice do you live by?

In both my personal and professional endeavors, I am guided by the principle of living by the platinum rule: ”Treat others as they wish to be treated.” This philosophy encapsulates my belief in the importance of empathy, understanding and respect in all interactions.

What is the most impactful book you have read, or podcast you have listened to, that relates to you professionally? What made it so impactful?

The book ”When Breath Becomes Air” by Paul Kalanithi has profoundly impacted my perspective on life, death and the pursuit of meaning. Kalanithi’s poignant memoir chronicles his journey from being a neurosurgeon to facing his own mortality after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Through his eloquent prose and introspective reflections, Kalanithi grapples with the complexities of existence, confronting the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. One of the most compelling aspects of the book is Kalanithi’s unwavering dedication to finding meaning and purpose in the face of adversity. Despite his terminal diagnosis, he continues to pursue his passions and aspirations with courage and resilience. His commitment to his work as a neurosurgeon, his love for literature and his deep relationships with family and friends underscore the importance of embracing life’s moments, however fleeting they may be.

How do you make sure you stay connected with your professional network?

I stay connected with my professional network through a combination of attending social events and conferences, as well as engaging on professional social media platforms like LinkedIn. I also make a point to send occasional emails or messages to colleagues in my sector to check in and stay updated on their progress. These efforts help me maintain valuable connections and stay abreast of industry developments.

How have friendships helped you professionally? Is there a friend (or Delta Zeta sister) that has been behind you every step of the way on your career journey?

Friendships, especially the close bond I share with my mom, have been instrumental in my professional journey. While I have many supportive friends, my mom stands out as my ultimate confidante and supporter. Her unwavering encouragement and belief in my abilities have been a constant source of strength and inspiration. Having such supportive relationships is crucial for navigating the challenges of a career journey, and I am grateful for the invaluable support of my mom and other friends along the way.
