How did you discover your passion for what you do, and what opportunities have helped shape your career?
My passion for fundraising and philanthropy emerged unexpectedly, propelled by a series of fortuitous opportunities and a willingness to embrace new challenges. Fresh out of college and faced with the prospect of returning home, I embarked on a relentless job search, determined to chart my own path. Landing a position as an Administrative Assistant at The University of Alabama’s College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office proved to be a pivotal moment, offering not only employment but also the opportunity to pursue additional degrees tuition-free.
As I transitioned to the Advancement side of the Dean’s office, I discovered a newfound passion for forging connections and fostering relationships. It was during this time that I was approached by Virginia Gilbert Loftin, Alpha Gamma-Alabama, to assist in fundraising efforts for the new Alpha Gamma house, an experience that ignited my enthusiasm for philanthropy. I found immense fulfillment in engaging with donors, learning about their interests and aligning them with the needs of the organization I served.
What began as a pragmatic job choice evolved into a deeply meaningful career. I came to view fundraising not as a daunting task but as an act of trust and collaboration, rooted in mutual respect and understanding. Each interaction became an opportunity to move forward passion projects and effect positive change, reinforcing my commitment to the field of fundraising and philanthropy.
Who has been an invaluable mentor for your professional career? What did you learn from them?
Throughout my professional journey, Virginia Gilbert Loftin has been an invaluable mentor and unwavering source of support. As a Delta Zeta of Alpha Gamma, Virginia believed in my potential even before I fully understood it myself. She has been a guiding light in the complexities of fundraising, opening three transformative career doors for me. I owe a great deal of my professional growth and development to Virginia’s mentorship and countless hours of encouragement.
In addition to Virginia, I found mentorship and guidance from Tom McLeod during my pursuit of a Masters at The University of Alabama. Tom’s perspective as a male professional and executive provided invaluable insights into navigating professional spaces that were previously unfamiliar to me. His mentorship has challenged me to broaden my horizons and approach situations with a fresh perspective.
Beyond these individuals, my parents have been an unwavering source of motivation and support, instilling in me the values of perseverance and dedication. Their encouragement has been instrumental in my journey, guiding me through both triumphs and challenges.
I am deeply grateful for the love, guidance and opportunities provided by Virginia, Tom and my family. Their mentorship has shaped me into the professional I am today, and I am committed to paying their support forward by empowering others in their own professional journeys.
What words of wisdom or advice do you live by?
Here’s the real deal on how I navigate life: trust your gut, and cherish your time. Seriously, your intuition is like your own personal GPS – it’ll steer you right every time. No matter how shiny or tempting something looks, if it doesn’t vibe with your gut, it’s a no-go. You’re the boss of your own journey, so don’t be afraid to follow your instincts.
Now, let’s talk about time. It’s the one thing we can’t get back, right? I’ve been there, hustling away at work day in and day out. But then it hit me – life’s not just about the grind. It’s about those moments that light you up, whether it’s chilling with friends, snuggling with my pups or just soaking up the sunshine with my fiancé. So, before I say yes to another commitment, I ask myself, ”Is this how I want to spend my time?” If the answer’s not a hell yes, then it’s a pass.
These two principles? They’re my North Star, keeping me grounded and focused on what really matters in this crazy ride called life.
How do you make sure you stay connected with your professional network?
Through consistent engagement with professional and civic groups like Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Rotaract of Birmingham. Showing up is the easiest thing you can do, and you never know who you will encounter at luncheons and training sessions. In a given month, I spend an average of 2-4 lunches and 1-3 evenings with professionals and peers.
How have friendships helped you professionally? Is there a friend (or Delta Zeta sister) that has been behind you every step of the way on your career journey?
Friendships have played a pivotal role in my professional journey, none more so than the unwavering support of Virginia Gilbert Loftin, a dear friend and Delta Zeta sister. Virginia has been by my side every step of the way, offering invaluable guidance, encouragement and belief in my potential. Her unwavering support has been a constant source of strength, empowering me to navigate challenges and pursue my aspirations with confidence. Without Virginia’s friendship and mentorship, I wouldn’t be the person I am today, both personally and professionally. She has been my rock, my cheerleader and my confidante, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
