How did you discover your passion for what you do, and what opportunities have helped shape your career?
From a young age, I always found beauty in the power of a team ship/friendship. I find empowerment in helping others and seeing them succeed to their full potential – which started with my twin brother, who was always by my side. I truly know that the core of people are good, and sometimes it has to be supported and nurtured before it can come out. In my career, I feel privileged to equip my graduates with the tools they need to be successful in the healthcare roles that they have worked so hard to obtain. For some of my graduates, I am the first support system they have ever had – which serves as a daily reminder of how truly important my role is – and that I am exactly where I need to be. If you truly love what you do with passion and love behind your work, you will always succeed. My graduates teach and help me, just as much as I help them, and their resillence speaks volumes that shape me daily.
Who has been an invaluable mentor for your professional career? What did you learn from them?
My current director, Stephanie Druding, has been someone over the past 2.5 years, who has been extremely influential in my growth and development. One of the most important skills that I have learned and actively apply is how to communicate effectively in various situations, and the power of active listening.
What words of wisdom or advice do you live by?
Be the energy you want to attract. Once we change our overall perception of life and let go of all the negative beliefs and thoughts, our energy will change, so that we can attract things we want. Reaching our goals starts with attracting energy that is more positive. As Catherine Ponder wisely stated, “What you radiate outward in your thoughts, feelings, mental pictures and words, you attract into your life.” Therefore be the energy you wish to attract, emit that frequency consistently, and trust in the invisible ripple effects aligning people and circumstances to support your dreams. You are the change agent who sets it all into motion.
What is the most impactful book you have read, or podcast you have listened to, that relates to you professionally? What made it so impactful?
“Untamed” by Glennon Doyle. “Untamed” is an inspiring memoir of Glennon Doyle, a woman who found peace and inner strength by challenging life in all its areas, from love to parenting, personal growth and work, after going through a powerful change that led her to discover crucial aspects about herself and allowed her to build a new life. Here are my three favorite lessons from the book:
- Don’t repress your true self, it will lead to unhappiness.
- Putting yourself first can make you a better parent for your children.
- Stop fighting what’s meant to be, and embrace your true destiny.
How do you make sure you stay connected with your professional network?
I have always been one to stay connected with my professional network by submerging myself into company culture and all of the wonderful resource groups and various things companies offer. At UMA, I am extremely fortunate to be a member of four different Employee Resource Groups, as well as serve as an elected board member for our ”Puma Pals” mentorship program that is offered to onboard all new employees.
How have friendships helped you professionally? Is there a friend (or Delta Zeta sister) that has been behind you every step of the way on your career journey?
I cherish my Delta Zeta friendships deeply. I moved to Tampa seven years ago, and I was extremely fortunate to have five other sorority sisters already living down here and well established. All of them helped me move into my apartment, shop for all of my new furniture and introduce me to their community of friends. Some of these women were my pledge class sisters and some from the pledge class below – the point being they showed support and love with no hesitation and picked back up immediately like none of us even had time apart.
My pledge sister, Katie Bickerstaff (McConnell) has been by my side since bid day and always been my biggest supporter in all aspects of life. She is always pushing me to go for what I want, holding me accountable and challenging me to push my own boundaries for the things I truly deserve. She owns two of her own businesses, while also working full time as an accountant; and serves on the head of various volunteer boards – my role model and true sister!
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Play bass guitar, skateboard and hang out with my two dogs, Peaches and Selah.
