Which of the Delta Zeta shared values resonates with you the most?Curiosity
Tell us about a defining moment in your career so far – how did it impact your future and what did you learn from it?
While teaching second grade, state-level policies were enacted that drastically impacted my ability to effectively teach my students. It was the first time I was overtly aware of and felt the impact of policy implementation, and it made me question, who makes these decisions and how can I play a role in enacting equitable policies to support students? This curiosity led me to pursue further education in education policy, work in roles in which I conducted analyses to support leaders in making decisions at the school, district and state level, as well as pursue doctoral studies focused on education policy.
What advice would you give Delta Zeta sisters pursuing leadership roles in your field?
The education sector needs passionate people with varied skills and expertise. For example, some people might find they’re happiest in a teaching role, while others might pursue school-level leadership, whereas others, like myself, who gravitate more toward research, data analysis and advocacy, also play an important role in supporting school and district level decision makers. There are many other roles across industries that work in the education sector and while the day-to-day duties may look different across positions, people working in the sector are united by a greater goal of improving outcomes for students.
How has being a Delta Zeta influenced your professional journey or approach to leadership?
Joining Delta Zeta as a first-generation college student propelled my development as a leader and professional. From seemingly small things like learning how to dress in business casual and learning Robert’s Rules of Orderto the bigger things like developing confidence in my abilities to lead while serving as Vice President of New Member Education, and learning to embody the key tenets of The Creed—all of these have shaped how I show up in my professional and personal life.
