How did you discover your passion for what you do, and what opportunities have helped shape your career?
My journey into the field of medical speech-language pathology was sparked by my own experience of sustaining five sports-related concussions. As I navigated the challenges and uncertainties of recovery, I developed a profound empathy for individuals facing similar struggles, particularly those with brain injuries. Motivated by a desire to make a meaningful difference, I embarked on a path to pursue a career in speech-language pathology. My education at California State University/San Marcos and California State University/Long Beach provided me with invaluable knowledge and skills, laying a solid foundation for my professional journey. However, it was the opportunities afforded to me through internships, externships and extracurricular activities that truly shaped my career trajectory. My involvement with Delta Zeta not only honed my leadership abilities, as I served as Chapter President in 2018, but also opened doors to global experiences and philanthropic endeavors. Through my role as a Global Marketing and Philanthropy Intern in 2019, I gained insights into organizational management and community outreach, further fueling my passion for making a positive impact. Additionally, my participation in two international hearing missions with the Starkey Hearing Foundation allowed me to apply my knowledge of speech and hearing mechanisms to provide the gift of hearing to people in need around the world, solidifying my commitment to serving others through my profession. Each of these opportunities has played a pivotal role in shaping my career as a medical speech-language pathologist, reinforcing my dedication to helping individuals overcome communication and swallowing challenges and fostering a greater sense of empowerment in their lives.
Who has been an invaluable mentor for your professional career? What did you learn from them?
Having my dad, a seasoned physical therapist, as a mentor has been an invaluable asset in my professional journey as a speech-language pathologist. His wealth of experience, knowledge and wisdom in the healthcare field has provided me with invaluable guidance and insight as I navigate the challenges and complexities of my career. Throughout the years, he has mentored me, imparting invaluable lessons, sharing practical advice and offering unwavering support every step of the way. Our recent opportunity to work together in San Diego was a truly enriching experience, as I had the privilege of learning directly from him in a professional setting. His mentorship has not only deepened my understanding of patient care but has also strengthened my confidence and competence as a healthcare professional. I am immensely grateful for his mentorship, which has played a significant role in shaping my professional growth and development.
What words of wisdom or advice do you live by?
The words of wisdom taught to me by my dad, ”Just keep doing what you’re doing, and you’ll be just fine,” serve as a guide in both my personal and professional endeavors. This reminds me to stay focused, persevere through challenges and trust in the process of continuous growth and improvement. Whenever faced with uncertainty or self-doubt, I draw strength from this reassuring mantra, knowing that as long as I remain committed to my goals and continue to put forth my best effort, success will inevitably follow. It serves as a reminder to stay true to myself, embrace my journey, and have faith in my abilities to overcome obstacles and achieve my aspirations. With these words echoing in my mind, I am empowered to navigate life’s twists and turns with resilience, determination and unwavering optimism.
