How did you discover your passion for what you do, and what opportunities have helped shape your career?
To be honest, the Air Force wasn’t always the career I thought I’d pursue. I showed up to MTU on their spring shadow day, walked into the ROTC building for a program tour and never left. My passion has come from my experiences with the people I have had the pleasure working with throughout my career and seeing the positive influence I can have on my subordinates. Moving to new locations and being challenged with new types of jobs paired with the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people from all types of backgrounds has shaped where I’m at in my career now and where I’m headed over the next ten years.
Who has been an invaluable mentor for your professional career? What did you learn from them?
Lt Col John Millard. He was my boss during my first assignment away from home ten years ago now. At the time, I was a clueless 22-year-old leading 125 people. Lt Col Millard is a smart cookie, a master at time management and very approachable. During that assignment, I found out my mother was terminally ill; I was alone and beyond distraught. Lt Col Millard took care of me and went above and beyond to ensure my mind was right at work and at home. He taught me how to be compassionate, welcoming and to lead with love.
What words of wisdom or advice do you live by?
Bloom where you’re planted.
Moving every 2-3 years has it’s ups and downs; the location, the job, the lifestyle – you name it. These words of wisdom are a great reminder to focus on what you can control, to make the best of every situation, and continue growing and blooming wherever life may take you.
What is the most impactful book you have read, or podcast you have listened to, that relates to you professionally? What made it so impactful?
The book ”Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win” was written by two former Navy SEAL officers, and it really resonated with me. As a Logistics Readiness Officer, I am in charge of over 150 people at any given time. The book uses the authors experiences through storytelling to expand on important leadership qualities. The book was so impactful because it was so relatable. The topics that stuck out to me were the importance of taking ownership in both the successes and failures of your team; to put the attitude/ego aside and focus on effective and simple communication. And that there are no bad teams, only bad leaders.
How do you make sure you stay connected with your professional network?
Probably not surprising but Facebook has all the most up-to-date information to stay connected as well as our Career Field Hub online, so I check those regularly to stay engaged.
How have friendships helped you professionally? Is there a friend (or Delta Zeta sister) that has been behind you every step of the way on your career journey?
Ever since my commissioning in 2014, when nearly the whole chapter showed up on my big day, I have felt the full support from my friends. There are two sisters who come to mind that have been there for me no matter what, to share in both my successes and my roadblocks. My pledge sisters, Allison and Liz, have encouraged me, challenged me and believed in me from day one, and I know they will be there, no matter the location, on my last day, as supporters and friends sharing in my journey.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I love to explore with my family!
