How did you discover your passion for what you do?
I’ve been cake decorating as a hobby business since I was 15. Although I got a degree in Finance, and worked in the oil industry for many years, I always continued doing cakes on the side. A few years ago, I needed sprinkles for a cake, and I could not find what I was looking for. I ended up making them myself and had an “ah-hah” moment. If I needed these . . . other people surely did, too. And, the rest is history!
How do you continue to grow and be a lifelong learner?
One of the things that I find to be truly fascinating and love learning about is different businesses and how they have grown over time. Things they’ve done well and not so well. Networking and attending professional conferences have also been an invaluable tool in continuing education in a number of areas.
Who is your mentor, and how did he/she shape your career?
I wouldn’t say I have one mentor. I have several people who have helped and advised me as I’ve grown this business. I’ve leaned heavily on family, friends and peers in the cake industry for advice and support and various areas including financial planning, defining my customer based, marketing strategy, etc.
