How did you discover your passion for what you do?

When I was in law school, people would ask me, “Why do you want to be a lawyer?” And my response would be, “To change the world.” There are plenty of attorneys who are doing amazing work and are changing the world, however, in my field of practice, I did not feel as though I was making any sort of a difference. Fast forward four years, I had become very involved in my church, Resurrection Lutheran. I was the director of the junior choir, a member of the handbell choir, a chancel assistant and a confirmation class teacher. Working within the church made me feel like I was making a difference. So, I left my job and walked into my Pastor’s office and I said to him, “I left my job. I want to work here.” It was the best decision I’ve ever made (aside from marrying my husband).

What words of wisdom do you live by?

“It’s not about you.” I believe this idea covers so many different aspects of life. It applies to all relationships; it’s not only about you. In relationships, you need to bend and sway together in order to be successful. It applies to everyday interactions that may not be so pleasant, like a rude person or an aggressive driver. In those circumstances, it is important to be reminded that the stranger doesn’t know you, and their rudeness or aggression is a reflection of them, not about you. It also applies to the bigger idea of our existence in this world. I find that we all have a tendency to get so overwhelmed by our own problems, or our own needs, that it is easy to forget that we have a responsibility to help serve others. It’s not just about you.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I love to sing and definitely enjoy a good karaoke night every now and then. I also really enjoy baking. I like to try out different recipes and decorating techniques. I like to spend time with my family, my husband and our miniature schnauzer, Ollie. We enjoy spending as much time on the water as possible and like to go boating and fishing.
